The .gh registration service is provided by the GhNIC, or Ghana Network information Centre. GhNIC is a non-profit organization vested with the responsibility of governing the .gh domain. The .gh extension has been recognized as the country code Top Level Domain (ccTLD) for Ghana. The GhNIC was formed in the year 1997 and functions as the Internet registry for the Republic of Ghana. The GhNIC is supported by the Internet Society of Ghana (ISOC-GH) and Network Computer Systems Ltd. (NCS).
Listed below are some of the requirements for registering a .gh domain:
- The company must be registered in Ghana.
- The fees range between $35 and $55 a year to register a top level .gh domain.
- Details of company registering the site are required for the application.
- Once approved, the domains should be functional within a period of six months.
- Available .gh sub domains include: com.gh, edu.gh, goc.gh, org.gh.
- The administrator of the registered domain should be a resident of Ghana.
- The primary DNS (domain name servers) for registered .gh domains should ideally be in Ghana.
Domain names with .gh extensions can contain between 3-63 characters and the numerical digits from 0 to 9. Alphabetical characters from A to Z and hyphens ("-") can also be included. The first and last characters of the domain name may not be hyphens, nor may the third and fourth characters.
The sub domains of .gh domain name registration are:
- com.gh — for commercial companies.
- gov.gh — for government organizations.
- edu.gh — for educational institutions such as schools and colleges.
- mil.gh — for the military
- org.gh — for organizations.
